The architect took utilitarian outbuilding architecture as its inspiration for two separate 40m2 and 60m2 multi-functional studio spaces within a mature landscape in deepest Suffolk. These artists’ ‘retreats’ are located remotely from the main house and are intended to create a tranquil, contemplative space in the garden.
They are formed from a geometric and efficient timber and steel framed construction with corrugated fibre cement board on the outside and simple painted chipboard linings internally, with insulation levels and low-energy lighting ensuring very low operational costs when in use.
Key to the design was counter pointing this robustness with the large glass picture windows giving panoramic views out to the surrounding countryside. This juxtaposition of low and high tech materials, solidity and void, man-made and natural resulted in a building that was resolved and engaging in equal measure to users and visitors.
