As one enters the Winchester Sport & Leisure Park, the impressive design and thoughtful planning of its facilities are immediately apparent. Despite its considerable size and complex functions, the building is easy to navigate, with many clever accessible design touches.
The architects and the local authority client were faced with several challenges, including strict planning constraints due to the building’s location near the South Downs National Park, and the presence of three underground rivers with high water tables and flood risks. However, they successfully created a building that meets the needs of the community while enhancing the area.
The project was designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. An access group made up of carers and disabled local individuals provided critical observations during the process. From the multi-level handrails to the linear wayfinding lighting, this has resulted in a building that truly offers opportunities for all.
The jury felt that the use of materials had been carefully considered, with a combination of curtain wall glazing, bespoke designed terracotta and high-performing polycarbonate panels giving the building tactility and transparency. Despite the deceptively simple and crisp appearance, the architects have used modern dry construction methods to achieve a high-performance structure that is resilient to the internal pool environment.
Despite the tight budget, the local authority client did not compromise on the quality of the design or the construction. The result is a building that demonstrates clear decision-making and delivers on its purpose of inclusivity, providing a long-lasting facility for the entire community.
Overall, the Winchester Sport & Leisure Park is a remarkable achievement that showcases the power of thoughtful design and careful planning. It provides a place for activity, sport, and social integration, while also meeting the aspirations of the client and the local community.
