This is a Pure Vista BLASTguard glass balustrade installation by Miller Fabrications at University (Birmingham) train station.

A top-of-the-range balustrade was required for the busy station to provide the highest quality of safety.

More and more transport locations are upgrading their sites in order to improve security, partly as a result of the upcoming Protect Duty, which is coming into force following the terror attack at Manchester Arena in 2017.

Pure Vista's anti-terror glass balustrade system is available in two variations: BLASTguard to withstand a bomb blast; and BULLETguard that utilises bullet-proof glass.

The BLASTguard balustrade is a frameless system where the glass is only required to be held by the base shoe. A through-glass handrail can be added as required on many projects, including this one.

  • BLASTguard is the first completely frameless, bomb-resistant glass balustrade system.

  • BLASTguard is easy to install and patented screw-clamp technology enables adjustment of the installed glass for a perfectly aligned finish.

The glass can be at 1800mm high and still withstand the 3kN/m public area loading and achieve the blast testing.

At University station BLASTguard was installed on the staircases around the main entrance. Within crowded spaces, anti-terror barriers can be used to protect different groups of people. By positioning the product on stairs and walkways, a blast will be more contained and the area safer.

Pure Vista runs CPD sessions for achitects and specifiers, covering:

  • Martyn's Law and Protect Duty counter terrorism legislation for events and publicly accessible locations (PALs).
  • Pure Vista's anti-terror glass balustrade products, including its commercial strength balustrade channels and fire-rated balustrade, which can be used on installations over 11 metres high.
  • Q&A session for discussion of your upcoming projects.
