Sheffield’s historic Upper Chapel complex sits in a quiet location in the city centre. It comprises two large, grade II listed buildings. Joining the backs of these is the Hollis Building. Previously rundown and dingy, it has now been refurbished and extended with careful and considered interventions. The result is a series of spaces that will delight users of the building. A combination of re-used materials, exposed original brickwork and a muted colour palette create a calm, relaxed environment. The modest new extension floods the spaces with daylight and the introduction of a cloister-like, fully glazed corridor creates a direct connection to the outside.
