Austrian manufacturer's neat platform storage solution offers real benefits for clients with family members of all ages
As a global provider of innovative furniture solutions, Blum has long embraced inclusive design.
In particular, Blum’s ageing and ergonomics specialist Amanda Hughes is a passionate advocate for 'ageing in place' - the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or circumstances.
'Our homes are our sanctuary, our safe place - sheltering and protecting us across the years,' says Hughes. 'But as years advance and bodies age, the way homes are designed can have a negative impact on our quality of life.'
She stresses that the kitchen is a key area where we must ensure inclusivity.
'We open and close cupboard doors up to 80 times a day and up to 50 of these movements may involve bending down at low levels. While opening higher cabinets also poses obvious risks, with people standing on step ladders or chairs to gain access, potentially risking falls.'
A step up in storage and safety
To negate this risk, Blum has designed SPACE STEP. This neat solution utilises the unused void behind cabinet plinths. It opens effortlessly, with a tap of the foot being all that’s required to activate the built-in SERVO-DRIVE opening support system. Then, with equal ease, the BLUMOTION technology ensures the softest of closes.
The fact that Space Step is activated by a weight of just 8kg makes it a truly inclusive solution suitable for all ages. Whether helping children reach worktops and washbasins or enabling older people to safely reach items at height, Space Step offers universal benefits. Plus, for added peace of mind, an anti-slip system securely locks it in position while in use.
Ensuring every home is future-proofed
Along with Amanda Hughes and the Blum team, inclusive design expert Karen Fardell is helping to drive the conversation about how to create homes fit for all ages, life stages and eventualities, ensuring they’re safe and easy to use for anyone.
'Homes must accommodate the needs of all people, from age 5 to 105,' she says.
Fardell is founder of the Future Proof my Home platform, which brings together expert advice and product information for clients looking to create beautiful energy-efficient homes that will adapt to their changing needs.
Her passion for future proofing was inspired by her surviving a brain haemorrhage in 2011 and having her first baby three years later.
By sharing Fardell's commitment to inclusive design across all areas of the home, and specifying solutions such as Space Step, architects can create environments fit for clients with family members of all ages, abilities and circumstances, giving everyone the chance to live in their homes for as long as is practically possible.
