Crittall Windows, synonymous with steel fenestration since 1849, is expanding its range of powder-coated finishes.

Working with the Dutch multinational AkzoNobel, the company has developed three new coating collections for its steel doors and windows: Natural Metal, Premium Metallic and Ultra Matt, each offering architects new creative possibilities.

For decades, steel-framed windows and doors have been a popular choice for architects keen to harness their slim sightlines, strength and classic aesthetic.

Crittall pioneered the powder coating of steel windows and doors and has been an AkzoNobel-approved applicator since 1976.

While always admired for their elegance, they have also been stuck in a predictable palette of black and anthracite grey.

Now advancements in finishing technology are giving specifiers the freedom to break away from the traditional monochrome look.

These finishes go beyond adding colour; they transform how steel interacts with its surroundings. A copper finish, for example, creates warm, shifting reflections throughout the day, while ultra-matt coatings absorb light for a striking, contemporary effect.

While black will remain a staple for steel windows and doors, a broader palette allows architects more freedom to shape a space’s personality.

In the Premium Metallic range, bronze and brass add warmth and heritage, while silver and nickel create a sleek, modern edge. Whether it is the industrial charm of weathered iron or the luxury of burnished brass, these new finishes lift a project from standard to unique.

And embracing colour does not mean compromising durability. The latest powder coatings are engineered for longevity, resisting weathering while maintaining vibrancy. With full control of its manufacturing process, Crittall ensures every finish meets the highest standards of quality and resilience.

'The world’s most striking architecture results from pushing boundaries,' says Crittall managing director Russell Ager. 'Moving beyond black takes confidence, but the rewards can be significant. Now is the time to be bold, be creative and embrace the full spectrum of possibility.'

Crittall’s expanded range of steel finishes offers architects a powerful tool to bring personality, individuality and nuance to their projects.
