Beyond black: steel windows get colourful

From bronze and brass to silver and nickel, everyone's favourite fenestration solutions are now available in three new metallic palettes

Crittall Windows, synonymous with steel fenestration since 1849, is expanding its range of powder-coated finishes.

Working with the Dutch multinational AkzoNobel, the company has developed three new coating collections for its steel doors and windows: Natural Metal, Premium Metallic and Ultra Matt, each offering architects new creative possibilities.

For decades, steel-framed windows and doors have been a popular choice for architects keen to harness their slim sightlines, strength and classic aesthetic.

Crittall pioneered the powder coating of steel windows and doors and has been an AkzoNobel-approved applicator since 1976. 

While always admired for their elegance, they have also been stuck in a predictable palette of black and anthracite grey. 

Now advancements in finishing technology are giving specifiers the freedom to break away from the traditional monochrome look.

These finishes go beyond adding colour; they transform how steel interacts with its surroundings. A copper finish, for example, creates warm, shifting reflections throughout the day, while ultra-matt coatings absorb light for a striking, contemporary effect.

While black will remain a staple for steel windows and doors, a broader palette allows architects more freedom to shape a space’s personality.
