The Abbey Wood Travelodge near Bristol is part of the company's new Budget-Luxe line, designed to offer its customers elegant and stylish accommodation.

To achieve this aesthetic, Stride Treglown architects chose the Cupa Pizarras Cupaclad natural slate rainscreen system, which is known for its dark, textured appearance and durability.

The specification helped distinguish the hotel’s two interlocking volumes, creating a dynamic contrast with the adjacent coloured aluminium panels.

The project’s success, marked by a nomination at the Facade Awards UK 2024, highlights Cupaclad's efficiency and visual impact.

Despite the slate’s complex look, its straightforward installation system allowed for a smooth, efficient build. Tim Gray, director of installers A2O Facades, praised the ease and resilience of the Cupaclad system, noting its excellent fire resistance and environmental sustainability.

The architects’ visit to the Cupa Pizarras quarries in Galicia and Castile & León, Spain deepened their appreciation for the product’s sustainable production.

Bruce Gray of Marshall Building Contractors noted the facade’s unique aesthetic, adding that the ease of installation and support from Cupa Pizarras kept the project on track. The team would highly recommend natural slate for future builds.
